August 2010 - Dean Jay: Blog and Top Ten Chart

Well what can I say other than "Spain has truly taken my heart this time". It's month 2 on the Costa Del Sol and with all the comings and goings of friends and parties I'm tanned but exhausted.

SOS have been ripping it up with their parties especially at the "Free Your Mind" night at Colonial Cafe in Marbella Port. It's been 2 long years but I think they have finally hit the Soulful / Deep house nail on the head - Every fortnight the port has been swathed in the sounds of Tito Pulpo and myself in addition to a Very Special Guest from Manchester Dave Law (ABTO). The next party is this Thursday and frankly I cannot wait. It's an atmosphere second to none at the "Free Your Mind" parties and that's mainly down to the fact that we do it a little different than most of the DJs on the Costa - Deep Soulful House, you would think, is perfectly suited to the Sun and Sand lifestyle on the South coast of Spain but it's not really been the way up until now, and my goodness when it took off it took off in the best possible way and it's all thanks to SaveOurSoul who have never taken their eye off the Scene in other parts of the world and have brought the wonderful feeling of the underground in spades!

Since I arrived over here it's not stopped for me - Bookings for SOS, Paradise Musik, Cafe Del Mar and others in Marbella, Coin, Tarifa and Sotogrande - every week has been tough but so enjoyable and it's getting busier and busier with sets booked from Thursday-Sunday and sometime twice per night. WooooHooooooooo!!! Long may it continue....

It's been a while since i've posted a mix but i hope when you hear this you feel it's been worth the wait.
I've delved deeper this time both in terms of Genre and Track selection. All tracks have that housey edge rather than the usual highs of my soulful sets.

To kick of we have "Messin with my mind" from the Thompson Project with The Layabouts fiddling the buttons to produce a tune that reminds me of a few of the Deep Dish tunes from the mid 90's that still sounds fresh today. Next we flow into "Poor People" QH's Epic soulful tune from a few years back but this time with a much deeper dubby edge. Next up is two tunes that seem to fit together very nicely, "Journey to the sun" in it's DF dub guise is smashing a few dancefloors that i've been on recently and i've added a nice little vocal to make it pop a little more mixed into KOT's fantastic but wrongly overlooked "Make Believe", with KOT's usual tiptop prodution and sublime vocals. Following this up we have a few of my Mashup's including "Just The Kinda House" which has been getting a lot of love from a load of my DJ friends and when you base a tune on Jimpster's "Just The Kind of Girl" there's no real surprise. Jimpster stars again with the achingly cool remix of Kasper Bjorke's Alcatraz, this tune is simply brilliant. Some absolute no-holds-barred stompers next up with "Rising Up" and a current favurite of mine although old "Take Me To The SKy" again a tune that seems to have been overlooked which is crazy in my opinion, these 2 tracks wreck dancefloors. Moving into the last few tracks most noteable an absolute classic amongst classics: "We Lift Our Hands In The Sactuary" Oji and Unas seminal deep gospel track. Rocco works his usual deep magic on "I Gave You Everything" utilising Rae's wonderful vocals. Next up is another of my recent favourites, the Afrocentrical "Uyangichomela" which i am really feeling right now (Listen carefully and you'll hear how to pronounce it). Finally is a track i played on my Monday night SOS Radio show which caused a bit of a stir, it's old but it's so good and so funky "We Fall Down" finishes the journey. Enjoy

I and Dave Law just wanted to say thank to everyone that made it to brickhouse on Saturday, it was the busiest it's been and had a special vibe, this event is getting better and better each month. "All Back To Ours" has been around a while but it really has now arrived, and is consistantly a superb night and we stand by our promise that it's one of the friendliest nights in the capital - a room full of great house music and smiling, dancing people that go home still smiling and with new friends made. It's exactly what our scene needs considering some of the attitude that is rotting the scene at the moment. So don't forget to tell your friends about "All Back To Ours" at the Brickhouse, Brick Lane every second Saturday of the month. And if you couldn't make it or still need to be convinced check out the photos (more coming soon) and book your diary for next month we will not disappoint.
